Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church
OUR HISTORY
The history of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church is supplied mainly through the recollections of church ancestors and a small number of old records.
Records however, are not available for the exact date that this church was established. As told by our forefathers, this church was started as a bush arbor, a place of worship that ws buit from bushes and branches to shelter the worshipers.
Accoridng to the original deed that was made on Februry 18, 1888 A.D. Lewis and Nannie Harris went into agreement with the trustees of the church and their successors to give them the tract of land were Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church was standing. The land was to be used and maintained as a place of worship and used for the ministry membership of the church. The land would always belong to the church as long as it was used for the purpose for which it was given.
Since the years of its establishment, there have been nine elected pastors: Rev. Isom Moore, Rev. W. N. Hawkins, Rev. George Edmonds, Rev. Brown, Rev.. J.S. Spruill, Rev. William Alston, Rev. Timothy Edwards, Rev. Jimmie Lowe, Rev. Jack Reese Jr, and our current pastor Rev. Reginald Carter.
As accurately as we can establish, the church has had thrity-two men elected to the board of deacons. Our present deacons are: Deacon Dennis Alston, Deacon Willie Arrington, Sr., Deacon Willie Arrington, Jr., Deacon Sandy Carter, Deacon Robert Copleand, Deacon Leonrd Harris, and Chariman Deacon William Scott .
There are five ordained ministers and one minister who evolved from Mt. Olive membership: Rev. Walter R.Alston, Rev. J.E. Alston, Rev. Erastus Johnson,(All Deceased) Rev. Tommy Arrington, Rev. Geno Mitchell (who is still a very active member), and Minister Elizabeth Arrington.
